black lives matter
George Floyd had his life squeezed out of him in a callous act of police brutality on the 25th May 2020 in the USA. His death sparked outrage across the globe and has seen protests against police brutality and racism all around the world.
Time and again we witness that black lives are not all considered valuable to institutions like the police and if we dig a little deeper and look a little further, we will see that black people have been downtrodden and abused, blatantly and systematically throughout our history based on the colour of our skin.
The support that these protests have seen from all sections of our community is encouraging. Shockingly, there are people who refuse to see how black lives are targeted and in some cases terminated inspired by racism.
I’ve been thinking about issues of race, power, control, prejudice and fear. Why are black people considered dangerous and a threat? Where did that story begin? Black means something so positive to me but damming stereotypes are imbedded in our societal psyche resulting in people being afraid of each other and afraid of relinquishing control, leading to an unequal society.
WE ARE ALL EQUAL. To discriminate against someone based on their colour is stupid and wrong. We need to educate ourselves about world history and challenge notions that degrade black people. Who wrote the script? It’s time for the story to be re-written. It’s time for change.
Challenge
In the fight for justice, who is more afraid?
Black bodies considered as a great threat
Challenge the author on how his villains are portrayed
Adding voice to the ensemble, closed minds to persuade
Inequality and violence, deep-rooted from the outset
In the fight for justice, who is more afraid?
Attacked both subtle and overt, from the top it still cascades
Historical crimes, recent wrongs, we are urged to forget
Challenge the author on how his villains are portrayed
Our demands must be met. The moment for change has been delayed
Release the grip on hate, mounting pressure will beset
In the fight for justice, who is more afraid?
Dance not around the issues, resist the option to evade
Acknowledge, accept, address the hurt and halt further upset
Challenge the author on how his villains are portrayed
Our future will remember the roles we all played
The breakthrough comes as we all change our mindset
In the fight for justice, who is more afraid?
Challenge the author on how his villains are portrayed.
