Defence Walls

Defence Walls is one of my favourite poems I have written. I hope you agree, it’s a good one!!

Some years back, I used to give my all to others. I really wanted to show them that they were loved and their life had meaning. Nothing wrong with that! The problem arose as I wasn’t investing the same love and affection into my own life. I was waning. I began to feel insignificant.

A friend of mine helped me to see where I had been going wrong. He quoted Lisa Nichols “Serve from your overflow, don’t serve from your cup”. Giving to others is natural, but what’s in your cup is for your own needs. If you serve from your cup, you may feel lack and may start to feel depleted. But if your cup is full and overflowing, you have got more that enough to give to others.

This poem is about giving to others and finding nothing left for yourself. I hope you enjoy it!!

Defence Walls

It may have been said repeatedly and harshly and so convincingly from more than one source that
you turned it into fact and built your defence walls.

It may have been said from a voice of authority, from a position of contempt, from a heart of fury
that you choose to believe lies over truth and built your defence walls.

It may have been said openly or subtly, the message directed straight to your heart that you forget
all hope and accept this reality and built your defence walls.

It may have been unspoken but still you learnt and wounded and bruised you built your defence
walls.

Your defence walls were built to protect you.
Your defence walls were built to make you strong.
Your defence walls were built to keep out the pain.
Your defence walls were built so you wouldn’t get hurt.
But behind those walls there is loss, damage, sorrow, death and heartache.

I tried to break down your defence walls
To slip in between any cracks
To penetrate the mighty fortress
With fearful ferocity and
Pleading petitions
But you would not soften

Whilst my eyes were on you
My arms were around you
My head was invaded by thoughts of you
My heart possessed on impressions of you
I neglected to defend myself.

Besieged, disregarded and abused
Naively defenceless
Scattered remains
Confess my folly
As I’m swept behind enemy lines
Easy game for my foes
Proclaiming life is not as good as you dream it to be.
