I celebrated my birthday last week – as did the Queen of my Heart – my lovely mother. Last year, my mum celebrated a milestone birthday (rather naughtily I reveal her age in my poem, which she is not very happy about!!) I wrote this poem especially for my mum to mark the occasion.
My mum is a very jovial character, she regularly jokes and uses the catchphrase “Do you know who I am?” when we recount stories of how people do not respect how awesome we are!! I mean – really???
I thought the catchphrase could come in handy when my dad got my mum into trouble. Being a practical man, my dad gave my mum a penknife to carry and use when she’s on the go and having lunch. The knife also had a fork and spoon. However, my mum’s knife (fork and spoon) got confiscated when she had to go through security of a building. They were not impressed with my mum and her justification for carrying it. Really???? “Do you know who I am!!!!”
Do you know who I am?
(For mumma)
Who do you mistake me for?
I am not impressed, that’s for sure
I’ll tell my husband, he’ll wage a war
Do you know who I am?
From St Thomas Parish by the sea
I’m of Jamaican stock, can’t you see?
With a glowing smile and sparkling personality
Do you know who I am?
As a young, country girl I dreamt for more
Than my home, Johnstown could cater for
When I got the chance, I left Jamaica’s shores
Do you know who I am?
I landed up in England
Arriving here to lend a hand
Becoming a nurse – it was the country’s demand
Do you know who I am?
I’ve worked over 50 years in healthcare
With babies, children, adults – the whole affair
Favoured by all, I’m a nurse extraordinaire
Do you know who I am?
My children are a joy to me
They say I’m kind, sweet and lovely
I remember rocking them upon my knee
Do you know who I am?
I’ve been married for almost 4 decades
A long lasting marriage – we’ve made the grade
He’s the one for me – I won’t dare to trade
Do you know who I am?
I’ve worked hard but I’ve had some fun
I’ve had my share of days in the sun
I’ve got beautiful friends and family – I can’t be glum
Do you know who I am?
I’ve been described as a trusted friend
Supportive, caring, gentle – I never offend
I’m giving, patient, funny – a perfect blend
Do you know who I am?
I thank God I’ve now turned 70
I’ve been blessed – God has been so good to me
I’m still young at heart – don’t I look 53?
Do you know who I am?
