Blue Hyacinth

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Today we celebrate Mother’s Day in the UK.

I would like to wish all mothers and all women who play mothering roles a beautiful day!

I know that Mother’s Day can be difficult for some people who have lost their mothers – my thoughts are with you on this day too.

Blue Hyacinth

My mother is a fantastic, strong, lovely & funny woman.

I wrote a poem for her at a time in my life when I was struggling & largely sad and upset most of the time.  Thinking about my mum and speaking to her, always brought me comfort.

My mum is called Hyacinth.  I looked up the characteristics of Hyacinth flowers and I learned that the blue variety signified, constancy, sincerity, fidelity and loyalty.  I thought this was lovely and apt for my mum.  I giggled to myself because I imagined telling my mum that I wrote a poem for her called ‘Blue Hyacinth’ because she gave me the blues!!  Before revealing the true meaning.  I ensured I used a rhyming scheme as according to my mum “It’s not a poem unless it rhymes”

Blue Hyacinth

For Mumma

Beautiful and fragrant

Exceptional in every way

Clearly heaven sent

To brighten a dark day.

Splendid ilk clothed in magic blue

Soft-hearted, tender and sweet

Gentle and loving right on cue

The finest you would ever meet.

She laughed all day with her children

In a faithful, devoted display of loyalty

Protecting and fussing like a Mother Hen

Esteeming us as if we were royalty.

The time came to move away

To seek riches, fortune and fame

And when I said “I cannot stay”

Blue Hyacinth wanted to play a game.

“Name something blue”

“Oh wait, give me a minute”

“Would you like a clue?”

“Of course not! It’s you, in’it!”

“Negative, my dear little one.

Look above, cast an eye.”

This was actually quite fun

“I”ve got it, it’s the blue sky.”

“Right, the blue sky is blue like me

So whenever we are apart

Take a good look above and see

The blue sky is me, and you are in my heart.”

When my days feel dark as night

I peer out and look above

Beyond terror, beyond disappointment, towards the light

And I recognise my mother’s love.
