Lullaby

Being Misunderstood

I’m sure there are times when we feel that nobody understands us.

I wrote ‘Lullaby’ when I was experiencing a lot of pain, a lot of hurt and a lot of sadness.  In response to my feelings, I felt I heard voices of comfort but also voices of frustration.  I did feel that I was being babied – either out of being patronised or being nurtured. This didn’t address the pain and left me with a sense of being misunderstood.

It is hard when you are going through your own emotional or mental turmoil for other people to understand what you are going through.  I am grateful that people did try to help.

To a certain degree, I felt that I was being soothed to sleep like a baby.  What is the alternative?  I don’t have the answer.  I know what it feels like to be on one end of the spectrum, but I have limited experience of being on the other side.  I think showing love and trying to understand at the same time as trying to aid and assist is key.

As I say, I don’t have the answer, but here’s a snapshot into how I was feeling at the time.

Lullaby

‘Hush little baby, don’t you cry
Mumma’s gonna sing you a lullaby
Hush little baby, don’t you cry
Don’t you cry, don’t you cry.’

Don’t cry baby
No-one likes a cry baby
Dry those eyes, baby
You’re too pretty to cry, baby
‘Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes’
No, Big Girls don’t cry, baby.

Don’t get mad, baby
No-one tolerates an angry baby
Simmer down, baby
Ok, Be angry and do not sin, baby
‘Don’t look back in anger
I heard you say.’
The sun must not go down on your wrath, baby.

Don’t fight, baby
Stick and stones can’t break you, baby
Don’t retaliate, baby
Turn the other cheek, baby
‘Anything that’s worth having
Is sure enough worth fighting for.
You’ve gotta Fight, Fight….’
Fight, and I’ll beat you, baby

Don’t be anxious, baby
Trust in the Lord, baby
Calm down, baby
What have you got to be so anxious about, baby?
‘I find it kinda funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying….’
Lay it at the cross, baby.

Don’t be sad, baby
Don’t be so glum, baby
Look on the bright side, baby
Think of all you’ve achieved, baby
‘I’m blue da da de da da da
Da da de da da da da da de da da da’
Be of good cheer, baby.

Don’t love too hard, baby
Don’t give your heart away too swiftly, baby
We don’t want them to break your heart, baby
You’re too precious for that, baby
‘I fall in love too easily, I fall in love too fast
I fall in love too terribly hard, for love to last’
Protect your heart, baby

We love you, baby
Don’t punish us, baby
You’ve never cried, or even been angry, baby
You’ve never been in a fight or had any troubles, baby
Have you ever been sad, baby?
You look for love in all the wrong places, baby.
We love you baby.
Don’t cry baby – hush now, hush now.
‘Hush little baby, don’t you cry, don’t you cry, don’t you cry’.
